A superior room at the Middlebury Inn

Middlebury is a small Vermont town located on US Route 7 between Rutland in the south and Burlington in the north.   The town is home to Middlebury College which was founded in 1800.

Chartered in 1761 Middlebury exudes history with over three hundred buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. 

It’s also loaded with museums, charming accommodations, a world-renowned horse farm, hiking trails and great restaurants.  The best way to explore this quintessential New England town is on foot.

Accommodations

The Middlebury Inn, located in the center of town has been welcoming guests for almost two hundred years.  

Swift House Inn is a total of three 18th century houses whose rooms are filled with antiques. 

Inn On The Green is housed in an 1803 Federal style house and carriage house many of the eleven rooms offer views of the town green. 

Blueberry Hill Inn tucked into the Moosalamoo National Recreation Area surrounded by acres of privacy and a fresh water pond for swimming. 

On a budget or traveling with children check out the Courtyard by Marriott with king suites, cable TV, free high-speed internet, indoor heated pool.

What to do

Housed in an 1829 Federal style house is the Henry Sheldon Museum where docents dressed in 19th century costumes give tours telling the history of the house and its collection of period furniture and art. 

The Vermont Folk Life Center displays tell the history of folk art culture in Vermont.  Periodically the center displays the works of Vermont photographers, writers and folk artists.

The Trail Around Middlebury a twenty-mile hiking or walking loop starts at the Swift House Inn and runs along Otter Creek through woods and pastures. More strenuous options are any one of the nine trails of the Moosalamoo National Recreation Area on Rte. 125 near Middlebury College Snow Bowl. 

The University of Vermont (UVM) Morgan Horse Farm, a National Historic Site, sits on two hundred acres of pasture.  Guided tours of the 19th century Victorian barn bring you up close and personal with prize winning Morgans – the state horse of Vermont.

Where to eat

At Morgan’s Tavern in the Middlebury Inn choose from small plates of baked macaroni with Vermont cheddar cheese, fish and chips, or chicken piccatta with lemon caper beurre blanc.   

For fine cuisine with a view head to the Storm Café and snag a table by a window overlooking Otter Creek or dine alfresco on the deck. 

American Flatbread serves up creative pizzas and salads in a family style setting. 

Fire & Ice’s www.fireandicerestaurant.com specialties are prime rib and Maine lobster.  Don’t miss the Salad Ballroom with its array of seafood salads. 

Jackson’s On The River is known for its homemade soups, salads and huge sandwiches.

At Night

The Town Hall Theater and Middlebury College’s Mahaney Center for the Arts are venues for art shows, plays, and music and dance performances. 

Middlebury Arts Walk www.middleburyartswalk.com takes place every 2nd Friday from April to October with forty artists’ studios, galleries and shops participating. 

Looking for a pub to meet the locals in; Two Brothers Tavern with twenty-three kinds of beer, or sip a brew and watch your favorite sports on wide-screen televisions at Mr. Up’s both offer live entertainment on weekends.
